Custom Questions 101: Getting Started
Overview
Custom Questions lets your agency collect information that isn’t included in SALT’s standard insurance intake fields. Create flexible questions using multiple input types (text fields, dropdowns, checkboxes, and more) and add them to prospect forms or Live Intake templates to be reused across your workflows.

With Custom Questions, you can:
- Create custom fields: Build questions using seven different input types.
- Control data scope: Choose whether the data is collected once per policy or once per vehicle, driver, or property.
- Reuse across forms: Add the same question to multiple prospect forms and Live Intake templates.
- Export to Zapier: Custom question data is included in all webhook payloads.
- Generate PDFs: Custom answers appear in submission PDFs.
Custom Questions are best for agency-specific intake data, client preferences, and internal workflow information. (Note: Custom Question data is not sent to insurance raters.)
Where Custom Questions Appear in SALT
After a Custom Question is published, it can be added to intake workflows and will appear in several places across SALT.
> Prospect Forms - Custom Questions can be added to prospect forms to collect additional information directly from clients during the intake process.
> Live Intake Templates - Agents can include Custom Questions in Live Intake templates when collecting information during a call or manual intake.
> Submissions - Responses to Custom Questions appear on the associated submission and can be viewed by any user with access to that submission.
> Submission PDFs - When a submission PDF is generated, any Custom Question responses included in the submission will appear in the document.
> Zapier Webhooks - If your agency uses Zapier, Custom Question responses are included in webhook payloads, allowing the data to be sent to other systems or workflows.
Getting Started
✅ Activation
Before anyone on your team can create or manage custom questions, an Account Owner or Company Admin must activate the feature for your organization.
[How to Activate]
- Go to Settings → Custom Questions
- Review the Data Collection Agreement
- Select the Consent Checkbox
- Click Activate
Activation applies to the entire organization. Once activated, users with the proper permissions (see below) can create and manage Custom Questions.

🚫 Permissions
Once the feature is activated, access depends on user permissions, as depicted below.
| Permission: | Available For: | Capability: |
|---|---|---|
| Manage Custom Questions | Owners, Company Admins, Team Admins | Create, edit, publish, archive questions |
| View Submissions | Anyone with Submission access | See custom data on submissions |
| Add Custom Data | Users with 'Custom Questions'' enabled | Add published custom questions to existing submissions |
➡️ Custom Roles:
If your agency uses custom roles, you can enable the permission to manage Custom Questions per user.
- Go to Settings > Users & Roles
- Select the role you'd like to edit
- Enable Custom Questions Permission
- Save changes

🧂 Plan Limits
Each SALT plan includes a set number of Custom Questions. See the chart below for details.
| Plan: | Published Question Limit: |
|---|---|
| Propel | 10 |
| Propel+ | 20 |
| Middle Market | 40 |
| Enterprise | Unlimited |
| Custom | Unlimited |
Only published questions count toward the limit — drafts and archived questions do not count.
If you reach capacity, you can still create new draft questions, but you will not be able to publish additional ones until you either archive a published question or upgrade your plan.
